The board owed the Raiders one, and it paid up: Tahj Brooks, the No. 118 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 212 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Whatever Shedeur Sanders becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Conerly Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
They liked Josh Conerly Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 2. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Omarion Hampton in the 65th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 69 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board had Jermari Harris higher than the 103rd pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Malachi Moore at slot 138 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Gray. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Tahj Brooks still on the board at Round 6, Pick 37. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Clay Webb went about where he belonged in pick 216. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Antonio Williams in No. 217; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
