Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureF
The Patriots answered their biggest question with Maye. Grade: D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Patriots shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.

So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In pick No. 6 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick39 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 7 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick47 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
A clean, defensible pick in the 47th overall pick with a little surplus value in Xavier Worthy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jonah Elliss
A edge rusher of that caliber at pick 68 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick182 Rnd6 Andru Phillips
Value with a capital V on Andru Phillips in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jalen Green
Jalen Green at the 224th pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick232 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Blake Watson at slot 232 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
