Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
A passer of the future in Penix Jr., and a A-, for the Patriots.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

If Bortolini pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

It is a haul that will look even better come September.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In No. 13 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
They paid sticker price for Adonai Mitchell in the 34th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A tidy little value on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 68th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick103 Rnd4 Ray Davis
Ray Davis in pick 103 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139 Rnd5 Javon Foster
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Javon Foster at slot 139. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick182 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanor Bortolini in Round 6, Pick 7, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick224 Rnd7 Mark Perry
They liked Mark Perry enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
