Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D-.

The Cowboys spent real capital to be 37 picks early on Markel Bell, and the board is going to hold them to it. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Moore pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board.

They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Corleone.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Colton Hood
In pick 18 they get a potential shutdown corner, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In the Round 1 slot they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33 Rnd2 Akheem Mesidor
No edge and no loss on Akheem Mesidor in the 33rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick56 Rnd2 Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at the 56th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick63 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
Nice patience on A.J. Haulcy, who had no business lasting to pick No. 63. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick67 Rnd3 Markel Bell
Markel Bell in Round 3, Pick 3 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick73 Rnd3 Elijah Sarratt
No drama and no debate, Elijah Sarratt went about where he belonged in the 73rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92 Rnd3 Dontay Corleone
Taking Dontay Corleone in No. 92 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112 Rnd4 Julian Neal
Julian Neal in pick No. 112 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136 Rnd4 Louis Moore
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Louis Moore while clear needs at tight end sat open.
Pick152 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
A tidy little value on Beau Stephens in Round 5, Pick 12, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177 Rnd5 Matt Gulbin
By-the-book stuff, Matt Gulbin at slot 177 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick180 Rnd5 Bobby Jamison-Travis
They talked themselves into Bobby Jamison-Travis at pick 180, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick202 Rnd6 Keyshaun Elliott
Keyshaun Elliott in No. 202 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick218 Rnd7 Jeff Caldwell
A straight-up fair deal on Jeff Caldwell at the 218th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick228 Rnd7 Andre Fuller
They paid sticker price for Andre Fuller in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick242 Rnd7 Diego Pavia
They did well to land Diego Pavia in pick 242, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
