Draft Profile: Bio
Bryce Hawthorne's father, Ed, was a first-team All-Big Ten defensive lineman at Minnesota and spent time with the Miami Dolphins. Bryce played football and basketball at Osseo High School in Minnesota, earned all-conference honors and had only one other Division I offer, from St. Thomas, before signing with South Dakota State.

He redshirted in 2023, then played in 14 games in 2024 for a Jackrabbits team that reached the FCS semifinals, making 22 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss to earn Missouri Valley All-Newcomer honors. He transferred to Iowa for 2025, playing in all 13 games with an interception at Wisconsin, and won the team's Defensive Hustle Award.

Hawthorne has started at defensive tackle for Iowa in 2026. He had a sack in the loss to Ohio State, another in the 41-24 win at Washington, and a career-high eight tackles at Minnesota on 24 October.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Rare quickness off the ball for an interior lineman, often first into the backfield
  • Run defense has improved sharply, with seven stops in the game at Minnesota
  • Sacks against Ohio State and Washington show he can finish against Big Ten fronts
  • Plays hard to the whistle, a trait Iowa recognised with its Defensive Hustle Award
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Tackling is a serious problem, with 11 missed tackles in eight games
  • Missed five tackles at Minnesota despite being around the ball all afternoon
  • Undersized for the interior and gets moved by double teams on early downs
  • Pass rush stalled at Michigan, with one pressure in 63 snaps, and lacks counters
  • Has eligibility left as a redshirt junior, so his draft timing is not settled
Scouting Report: Summary
Hawthorne is a quick, active interior lineman who has made a big jump in his second year at Iowa. He fires off the ball, plays hard on every snap and has turned that into production, with sacks against Ohio State and Washington and seven run stops at Minnesota.

However, the finishing is not where it needs to be. He has missed 11 tackles this season, five of them at Minnesota, and he lacks the bulk to hold up against double teams snap after snap. His pass rush also needs a second move.

Overall, Hawthorne combines rare quickness with an effort level that shows up on every snap, along with an NFL family background. He projects as a priority free agent with a chance to stick as a rotational three-technique, and he could decide to use his remaining year at Iowa.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
