Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureD-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Texans a B.

The Julius Welschof pick is the one that will follow the Texans into the fall. They took him 155 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Mitchell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Texans indulged a want in Vaki while a need in quarterback and linebacker stayed open.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 23rd pick they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24 Rnd1 JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
Pick25 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 25th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell in pick No. 59 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick86 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
They reached a country mile for Leonard Taylor III at slot 86, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87 Rnd3 Blake Corum
They read the board right and Blake Corum was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 James Williams
A conviction pick on James Williams at the 124th pick that the board grades a round light. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick128 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 28: Sione Vaki adds a safety while quarterback and linebacker keeps waiting.
Pick236 Rnd7 De'Corian Clark
Circle this one: De'Corian Clark at pick 236 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick245 Rnd7 Julius Welschof
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Julius Welschof well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick250 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner McLachlan in pick No. 250, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
