Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Texans a B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Ennis Rakestraw Jr. slide 48 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They are betting Hopper proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

They will answer for taking cornerback early while interior defensive lineman and quarterback went begging. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In pick No. 23 they get a bendy edge with upside at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In the 24th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Terrion Arnold
Terrion Arnold at Round 2, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick58 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
A slide stopped in the 58th overall pick, with Edgerrin Cooper worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick59 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
You do not let a wide receiver like Brian Thomas Jr. reach slot 59 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick86 Rnd3 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while clear needs at interior defensive lineman and quarterback sat open.
Pick87 Rnd3 Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock slid further than he should have, and the 87th pick is lovely value for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick124 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
A reach on Theo Johnson in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 128, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick236 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at No. 236 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick245 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Somehow Frank Gore Jr. was still sitting there in pick No. 245, and they pounced on premier running back value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick250 Rnd7 Nathan Thomas
Nathan Thomas in No. 250 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
