The 2027 NFL Draft Order Is Taking Shape, With the Texans, Buccaneers and Titans Near the Top

Three weeks into the NFL season, nobody has secured a top pick. Still, the first outline of the 2027 draft order has appeared.

Houston, Tampa Bay and Tennessee currently occupy the first three spots, while two more winless teams sit close behind. September has already made April slightly more interesting.

Five winless teams have created an early traffic jam

Houston, Tampa Bay and Tennessee all entered Week 4 at 0-3, but they were hardly alone. The Los Angeles Chargers and Miami Dolphins also lost their first three games. That leaves five clubs with identical records and puts strength of schedule into the conversation much earlier than anyone in those buildings would prefer.

Draft followers tend to bounce between standings, prospect reports and other forms of game day entertainment as a season develops. Some will spend part of that downtime reading about Dragon Money casino, then return to a draft tracker to see whether another Sunday result has moved a team two or three places. At this stage, those movements can happen quickly.

One current order places the winless group this way:

  1. Houston Texans, 0-3

  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 0-3

  3. Tennessee Titans, 0-3

  4. Los Angeles Chargers, 0-3

  5. Miami Dolphins, 0-3

Houston and Tampa Bay carried the same .471 strength of schedule figure in that calculation, which means even the top two spots do not have much daylight between them. Tennessee sat at .510, Los Angeles at .588 and Miami at .627. Lower opponent winning percentages help in draft order tiebreakers. Strange incentive, simple math.

Houston and Tampa Bay are the surprises

Few September draft discussions expected Houston to become part of the race for the first pick this quickly. The Texans started 0-3 despite entering the season with ambitions well above the bottom of the standings. That contrast makes their presence here more interesting than the record alone.

Tampa Bay has produced a similar early jolt. The Buccaneers also reached Week 4 without a victory, putting them beside Houston in both record and current schedule strength. Three games cannot erase an entire preseason evaluation, but 0-3 does change the tone. A team suddenly starts appearing in mock drafts for reasons nobody planned in August.

The most useful numbers at this point are basic ones:

  • Five NFL teams remained winless after three games.

  • Houston and Tampa Bay shared the lowest current schedule strength among them.

  • Tennessee owned the third slot despite having the same record.

  • The Chargers and Dolphins completed the 0-3 group.

That is why an early draft order should be read as a snapshot rather than a forecast. One win can send a club behind several other teams immediately. One opponent getting hot can change strength of schedule too. The standings do not need permission before becoming messy.

Tennessee is back in familiar draft territory

Tennessee's position carries a different feel. The Titans finished 3-14 in both 2024 and 2025, then opened 2026 with three more losses. Seeing them near the top of another draft order therefore looks less like a September accident and more like the continuation of a difficult stretch.

The uncomfortable part is that Tennessee has not spent every week getting blown off the field. Some losses have remained competitive deep into games, which can make an 0-3 record feel harsher than the performances themselves. The draft table does not care. A close loss and a forgettable one count exactly the same.

For anyone checking the order over the next few Sundays, three details matter more than mock draft headlines:

  1. Start with record. Teams with fewer wins sit earlier among nonplayoff clubs.

  2. Check strength of schedule when records match, since the easier schedule receives priority.

  3. Treat every September position as temporary, especially with so many teams clustered together.

That last point deserves emphasis. Houston currently sits first, Tampa Bay second and Tennessee third, but the difference between them is thin enough to disappear in one weekend. The Chargers and Dolphins are waiting directly behind them with the same record.

Three games have given the 2027 NFL Draft an order. They have not given it a verdict.
