Tyrann Mathieu was born on May 13, 1992 in New Orleans and played at LSU, where he won the Bednarik Award in 2011. LSU dismissed him on August 10, 2012 after repeated violations of its substance-abuse policy. Arizona drafted him 69th overall in 2013. He started 11 of 13 games as a rookie before tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee against St. Louis on December 8, 2013. Madden NFL 25 rated him 72 for that season.

He intercepted five passes in 2015, made his first Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro honors. A second torn ACL ended that season in December. Madden NFL 17 rated him 96 for 2016. He spent 2018 in Houston on a one-year contract, and Madden NFL 19 rated him 93.

Kansas City signed him in March 2019. He won Super Bowl LIV over San Francisco on February 2, 2020. All-Pro selections followed in 2019 and 2020, and he returned to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021. Madden NFL 22 rated him 95 for 2021. He joined New Orleans in 2022 and started all 17 games in each of his three seasons there. He finished with 180 games, 838 tackles, 36 interceptions and 11 sacks. Mathieu retired on July 22, 2025.
