Kamario Taylor and Arnett's return fuel Bulldog optimism
Mississippi State finished 5-8 (1-7 SEC) in 2025, more than doubling its win total from a two-win 2024 but still stuck near the bottom of the league standings. The defining move of the offseason was Jeff Lebby handing the defense back to Zach Arnett, the former State head coach who ran the coordinator's chair in Starkville from 2020 through 2022 and produced three straight top-five SEC defenses.
Pair that hire with a full season of a dynamic young quarterback and Lebby, entering year three at 7-18, is calling this the most talented roster of his tenure. The pieces are in place; the question is whether they add up to results in the country's toughest schedule.
Offense
Kamario Taylor is the reason for the optimism. The highest-rated quarterback recruit in program history flashed as a true freshman, earning a pair of SEC Freshman of the Week honors and seizing the starting job by the regular-season finale. At 6-4 and 230 pounds he is a genuine dual threat with a strong arm and dangerous legs, and he closed the year in a hurry, running for 236 yards over his final two games, 173 of them in the Egg Bowl behind a 35-yard touchdown scamper. He capped things with 241 passing yards and a score in the Duke's Mayo Bowl loss to Wake Forest.
The work now is accuracy and consistency. Taylor completed just 55.8 percent of his 77 attempts, and the staff wants more predictable production inside the structure of the game plan, the kind of steadiness a full year as the starter should bring. Behind him, portal addition Jaden Rashada arrives as experienced insurance, joining App State transfer AJ Swann in a rebuilt room.
The receiver room lost its leading target with Brenen Thompson off to the NFL, but it stays deep. Anthony Evans III is the clear No. 1 now after a 67-catch, 831-yard, four-touchdown campaign, and he enters the fall chasing a 1,000-yard season while doubling as one of the team's most dangerous return men. Senior Ayden Williams (21 catches, 252 yards) and Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson, who put together a strong spring, add veteran depth. At tight end, Miami transfer Riley Williams brings 21 games and 187 receiving yards of power-conference experience to a group fronted by Sam West.
Fluff Bothwell is back after a bruising, productive 2025 that was slowed by injury; he still led the team with 142 carries and 677 yards. A fully healthy season could make him the program's first 1,000-yard back in years. The Bulldogs will spin shiftier options like Xavier Gayten around his physical, between-the-tackles style to keep the ground game balanced.
This is the swing unit. The line's inconsistency undercut the offense repeatedly last season, and Lebby is again piecing it together largely through the portal. Center Canon Boone is the lone returning starter, flanked by transfers Miles McVay, DJ Chester (LSU) and LJ Prudhomme (Arkansas). Jahkeem Shumpert-Perkins, a former junior-college addition who redshirted, did enough in the spring to lock down a tackle spot. If this group is merely adequate, the skill talent around it can carry the offense; if it falters again, the whole thing stalls.
Defense
Arnett's aggressive four-down front needs a pass rush that has gone missing; State compiled only 31 sacks over the past two seasons combined. The headline fix is Florida State transfer Amaree Williams, the prize of the class as a pure pass-rush threat who once doubled as a two-way freshman and even hauled in a 35-yard touchdown. He should pair with end Will Whitson, back for a seventh year after a knee injury ended his 2025 after a game and a half. Inside, DJ Reed, Jaray Bledsoe and nose tackle Kalvin Dinkins anchor the interior, though the unit must replace heavy attrition up front.
The second level returns useful experience in Tyler Lockhart, Zakari Tillman and Jalen Smith, who figure to handle most of the reps. Tillman logged 3.5 sacks a year ago, while Smith posted 57 tackles after transferring in from Tennessee. The group should benefit from Arnett's simpler, attack-first approach.
This is where the draft interest lives. Kelley Jones is the standout, a long 6-4 corner who broke out with 13 starts, 34 tackles, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions, and our board sees a player with the traits to push into the first round of the 2027 draft. The secondary as a whole has been rebuilt into a strength with bigger, faster bodies. Safety/linebacker Isaac Smith is the quarterback of the outfit, a tackling machine entering the year with 206 career stops. LSU transfer Jardin Gilbert and Rice transfer Marcus Williams add proven production, and Jett Jefferson holds down the other corner spot.
The kicking game is a genuine asset. Kyle Ferrie set the school's all-time scoring record for a kicker and connected on 17 of 20 field goals, including a school-record 55-yarder, and now sits fourth in program history in career points. Punter Ethan Pulliam, a third-team all-conference pick, boomed 46.8 yards per attempt with a 41.7 net. Evans and a stable of speedsters give the Bulldogs real juice in the return game.
Overview and Prediction
The schedule offers no favors and grades out as one of the toughest in the country. A soft opener against ULM gives way to a road trip to Minnesota and a brutal league gauntlet featuring Alabama, at LSU, Oklahoma, at Texas and the Egg Bowl at Ole Miss, with the added weight that State has not beaten Alabama since 2007. The talent is real and the arrow points up after the jump from two wins to five, but the projections stay cautious.
We see the Bulldogs landing in the bottom third of the SEC, in the neighborhood of the 13th-to-15th range the consensus pegs them for. The verdict comes down to the two things Arnett and the front five control. If the offensive line is adequate and the defense climbs toward the middle of the pack, State can flirt with bowl eligibility; if not, another year near the cellar awaits. Taylor is the ceiling-raiser, and for the first time in the Lebby era, the pieces around him look the part.
