Scouting Report: Summary

Shelby is a speed-based edge who wins the corner with a quick first step, and he turned that burst into thirty pressures and five sacks as a pass-rush threat for USC. He beat Michigan State for two sacks and five pressures, intercepted a pass to flash awareness beyond the rush, and finished as a tackler at a high level with only two misses. The get-off and the pass-rush production are the calling cards, and they show up against quality tackles.

The run defense is the clear weakness. His liability in run support, he recorded only eleven stops on a starter's snap count, and he wins almost entirely on speed with little power to convert when the rush stalls. His anchor gives way when tackles get into his frame, and the pass-rush production currently outpaces a still-developing counter plan. He is a passing-down asset whose early-down value has not arrived.

Used as a designated rusher, he can win on third down while he adds strength and a power element to hold up against the run. The speed and the production give him a real role, but the run-defense limitations keep the grade modest. He projects as a Day 3 sub-package rusher with upside, a speed weapon for a defense that protects him on early downs.
