Draft Profile: Bio
Carson Beck's journey to becoming Georgia's starting quarterback began in Jacksonville, Florida, where he made a name for himself at Mandarin High School. In 2018, Beck led the Mustangs to their first-ever state title, capturing Florida's Mr. Football honors along the way. His impressive senior campaign saw him complete 209 of 356 attempts for 3,546 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, earning him a spot on the 2018 MaxPreps Junior All-American 2nd Team offense.Rated as a four-star prospect by major recruiting services, Beck arrived at the University of Georgia in January 2020 with considerable fanfare. However, his path to starting quarterback was not immediate. He redshirted his first year, sitting behind JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett. In 2021 and 2022, Beck saw limited action, primarily in backup roles, completing 36 of 58 passes for 486 yards and 6 touchdowns across those two seasons.
Beck's patience paid off in 2023 when he finally took the reins of the Bulldogs' offense. His debut as a full-time starter was impressive, completing 302 of 417 attempts (72.4%) for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. This performance earned him Second Team All-SEC honors and a spot as a finalist for the Manning Award. Beck's arm led Georgia to an undefeated regular season, though they fell short against Alabama in the SEC Championship game. He capped off the year with a strong showing in the Orange Bowl victory over Florida State, completing 13 of 18 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns.
Entering the 2024 season, expectations for Beck were sky-high. He started the season strong, throwing for 680 yards, 7 touchdowns, and no interceptions in the early games. As the season progressed, Beck continued to showcase his talents, though his development didn't quite match the lofty preseason projections.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Prototypical size at 6'4", 220 pounds with good lean muscle mass for the quarterback position
- Quick, compact throwing motion allows for efficient velocity generation and tight spiral on passes
- Displays excellent touch and accuracy at all levels of the field, particularly on intermediate throws
- Advanced pre-snap diagnosis skills; consistently identifies matchups and adjusts protections
- Poised pocket presence; stands tall under pressure and slides away from rushers to extend plays
- Nimble footwork in the pocket to evade pressure while keeping eyes downfield
- Intelligent progression reader who works through options quickly and finds open receivers
- Excellent ball placement allows receivers to maximize yards after catch opportunities
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Arm talent is good, not great; lacks the howitzer to consistently drive balls outside the numbers
- Limited as a dual-threat; won't consistently stress defenses with his legs or escapability
- Occasionally hesitant on deep shots; needs to pull the trigger earlier on vertical routes
- Tends to fade away when faced with interior pressure, affecting throw trajectory
- Can be baited by complex coverage rotations; needs to improve reading post-snap shifts
Scouting Report: Summary
Beck possesses the tools to be a starting-caliber quarterback at the next level. His accuracy in the short to intermediate game and ability to operate within structure are his calling cards. He thrives in a timing-based passing attack that emphasizes quick decisions and precise ball placement. While Beck's physical tools won't wow scouts, his ability to diagnose defenses and distribute the ball efficiently will intrigue NFL offensive coordinators. He profiles best in a West Coast or spread system that utilizes play-action and gets the ball out quickly. Beck's ceiling may be capped by his lack of elite arm talent and mobility, but his floor as a potential game-manager type is relatively high.
Despite early-season hype, Beck's 2024 development hasn't quite met lofty expectations. Once viewed as a potential top-5 selection, he's now trending outside of the first round.
