Draft Profile: Bio
Deontae Lawson from Mobile Christian High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 5-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Lawson joined Alabama after being heavily recruited.

In 2021 as a freshman Lawson saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 11 snaps at linebacker for the Crimson Tide. He recorded no tackles, no assists, while adding no stops.

As a sophomore for the Crimson Tide in 2022 Lawson played in 10 games and took part in 386 snaps for the Crimson Tide. He recorded 35 tackles, 12 assists, while adding 22 stops. In coverage Lawson made 3 pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 83.6. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 5 total pressures, and 5 QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks during the year.

In 2023 as a junior Lawson played in 10 games and contributed on 603 snaps. He recorded 49 tackles, 20 assists while making 43 stops. In coverage Lawson chalked up 3 pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 101.9. As a pass rusher, he produced 20 total pressures, which included 13 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and 4 sacks on the year.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Showed initial quickness and good flexibility to dip and bend. Lawson has active hands and suddenness to his movements, demonstrating the ability to counter inside.
  • Work in progress as a pass rusher, with upfield burst and flexibility to dip and scrape.
  • Quick to read run, showing good agility and speed to get past blockers and finish. Experienced in coverage and gets a strong jam on outside receivers.
  • Has the fluid hips and long arms to turn and run with tight ends, as well as excellent range when dropping into zone coverage.
  • Tougher between the tackles than many expect. Fluid and quick drop into zone, covers enough ground to be Tampa-2 "MIKE" and knows where the markers are.
  • Lawson plays bigger than his listed size, with the functional strength and motor to take on and hold ground against much bigger blockers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • He’ll also need to be covered in the run game, more of a Will than a Mike in a 4-3 alignment.
  • Size will be a problem. Lawson doesn’t have much in the way of take-on skills, struggling to shed once blockers get into his body due to short arms and a relative lack of upper-body strength.
  • Plays too high when trying to set the edge. His motor is inconsistent.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
