After high school, Mapu joined Sacramento State.

In 2018 as a freshman Mapu saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 52 snaps for the Hornets. He recorded just 4 tackles, no assists, while adding 2 stops.

As a sophomore for the Hornets in 2019 Mapu played in 6 games and took part in 158 snaps for the Hornets. He recorded just 5 tackles, one assist, while adding 2 stops. In coverage Mapu made 2 pass breakups, no interceptions, and an elite QB rating when targetted of 53.0.

In 2021 as a junior Mapu played in 12 games and contributed on 665 snaps. He recorded 45 tackles, 12 assists while making 27 stops. Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Gets pressures on inside stunts and was too explosive for college guards to handle.
  • Mapu will always try to plow into the largest piles and has a good knack of ending up glued to the ballcarrier.
  • He’s a capable blitzer with the ability to close quickly. He’s also very good in coverage, rangy with good awareness in zone coverage, and fluid and fast enough to run with most tight ends.
  • He’s very good in coverage when looking into the backfield in zone coverage.
  • He’s effective in pursuit when chasing down backs as a run defender, and Mapu has the athleticism to cover a lot of ground when dropping into coverage.
  • Accelerates rapidly and has a great feel for angles. Mapu isn’t huge, but he packs a pop.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks the strength to blow up fullbacks and bulk/length to prevent getting engulfed by better linemen at the second level.
  • Mapu lacks the speed of a chase and- tackle guy. Mapu lacks twitch as a pass rusher and lacks the feet and flexibility to threaten around the edge.
  • Has lean limbs and needs to get stronger and add bulk to his frame.
