A three-star out of Las Lomas in Walnut Creek, California, Karnley played receiver and cornerback in high school before signing with Arizona, where he redshirted in 2023 and started six of ten games in 2024 with five pass breakups. His path wound through the portal. Karnley spent a spring at Miami before transferring again to Virginia for the 2025 season.At Virginia he recorded 24 tackles, four pass breakups and an interception across fourteen games, posting stingy completion numbers as a veteran zone cover man who plays the receiver's hands well.
