Grant Gunnell from St Pius X High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Gunnell opted to join Arizona.In 2019 as a freshman Gunnell saw action in 8 games for the Wildcats as he threw for 1239 yards on 155 attempts with a completion percent of 65.2 for an average of 8.0 yards per pass, with 9 TDs, while taking 14 sacks, and an excellent QB rating of 106.4.
In 2020 as a sophomore he played in 4 games as he passed for 622 yards on 93 attempts with a completion percent of 67.7 for an average of 6.7 yards per pass, with just 6 TDs, while also taking 9 sacks, and putting up an excellent QB rating of 98.9.
After season's end Gunnell transferred to North Texas where as a junior in 2022 Gunnell played a total of just 2 games. He passed for just 75 yards on 9 attempts and put up a completion percentage of 44.4 for an average of 8.3 yards per attempt, with no TDs, and allowing one sack, with just QB rating on the year of 34.3.
After season's end Gunnell transferred to Sam Houston State where as a senior Gunnell saw action in just one game as he threw for just 100 yards on 22 attempts with a completion percent of 63.6 for an average of 4.5 yards per pass, with no TDs, while taking 2 sacks, and totaling a QB rating of 55.1.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Gunnell is enough of a threat as a runner to earn respect from back-side defenders at the next level, opening opportunities for running backs.
- He shows very nice touch on deep balls, as well as the ability to anticipate windows and fit in tight throws with good velocity.
- He’s a pure athlete, loose-limbed and flexible. He has the speed to pick up yardage in scramble situations.
- While he’s not a burner, Gunnell has enough athleticism and speed to make plays with his legs when he takes off as a runner.
- Gunnell has plus arm strength and a willingness and ability to throw receivers open, as well as good ball placement out to intermediate levels.
- He’s an athlete who runs well and must be accounted for in the read-option game.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Gunnell often plays out of control. His mechanics are sloppy, particularly his footwork, and his decision making is suspect.
- Lacks poise in the pocket and abandons his reads too quickly. Takes too many chances.
- Gunnell tends to hold the ball loosely and away from his body, putting him at risk for strip sacks.
