After high school, Sawyer joined Ohio State after being heavily recruited.In 2021 as a freshman Sawyer saw action in 13 games and played a total of 173 snaps for the Buckeyes. He recorded only 7 tackles, 2 assists, while adding 10 stops. As a pass rusher, he added 11 total pressures, which included 5 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and 4 sacks on the season.

Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Sawyer also shows some stiffness when trying to bend the edge, often getting pushed past the pocket — Sawyer seems more comfortable countering back inside.
- Can struggle at the point of attack. As a pass rusher, he lacks the ideal length to ward off blockers and can allow linemen to get into his chest.
