Averaging 29.5 yards per catch as a true freshman, Johnson debuted at Missouri in 2023 with 13 receptions for 383 yards and three touchdowns over 13 games. He arrived as a three-star recruit after lettering four seasons at Dickinson High School in Texas.In 2024 Johnson played 12 games and caught 25 passes for 352 yards, closing the year with seven receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown in Missouri's Music City Bowl win over Iowa.
As a junior in 2025 he started seven of 12 games and finished third on the team with 340 receiving yards on 28 catches with two touchdowns. Johnson opened the season with five receptions for 134 yards and a score against Central Arkansas and added a seven-catch, 80-yard game against South Carolina. In December he entered the portal and became Mississippi State's first transfer commitment of the cycle, signing with the Bulldogs for 2026.

Marquis Johnson is a vertical specialist whose game lives on the deep ball. A Missouri receiver with rare timed speed, he flashed a big-play gear from the start, averaging nearly 30 yards per catch as a freshman and opening 2025 with a 134-yard, one-score afternoon against Central Arkansas. When he connects downfield, he can flip a game in one play.The trouble is consistency. He managed just 28 catches for 352 yards in 2025 and never grew into an every-down target, his slight frame limits his contested and physical matchups, and his narrow route tree makes him a boom-or-bust piece who disappears when the deep shots do not land. The production has simply never matched the speed.
He fits an offense that wants a designated field-stretcher and can live with the inconsistency for the explosive plays, and he carries that role to Mississippi State in 2026. Overall, the timed speed is a real trait, but Johnson projects as a developmental vertical specialist and gunner whose draft case rests on the speed alone until he broadens his game. The deep-ball element and coverage-unit work give him a niche to fight for, but the margin is thin and the hands and route tree have to support more than a few shots a game.
