Draft Profile: Bio
Haynes King, a dual-threat quarterback from Georgia Tech, put together a historic 2023 season for the Yellow Jackets. The 6'3", 215-pound signal-caller threw for 2,842 yards and 27 touchdowns while rushing for 737 yards and 10 scores. King was one of only two Power Five players with at least 2,800 passing yards, 25 touchdown passes, 700 rushing yards and 10 touchdown runs in 2023, joining Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels of LSU.

King's journey began at Longview High School in Texas, where he earned Under Armour All-American honors and was ranked as a top-15 recruit in the state. After a brief stint at Texas A&M, King transferred to Georgia Tech. In his first game as a Yellow Jacket, he set a school record for passing yards in a debut with 313. Throughout the season, King continued to etch his name in the Georgia Tech record books, setting new marks for touchdowns responsible for (37) and total offense (3,729 yards).

King's 2023 season earned him honorable mention all-ACC honors and the respect of his teammates, who voted him a permanent team captain. His performances against ranked opponents were particularly noteworthy, including a game-winning drive against No. 17 Miami and a four-touchdown passing display in a victory over No. 17 North Carolina. King also has a background in track and field, running the 400, the 4x400 relay, and throwing the discus in high school.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Twitchy athlete with plus-plus wheels for the position, showing road runner speed in the open field
  • Can make all the NFL throws and delivers dimes on deep balls
  • Quick trigger on his release, gets the ball out in a blink and can throw from multiple platforms
  • Flashes the ability to be a true dual-threat, can gash defenses with his legs when plays break down
  • Natural leader who commands respect in the huddle, voted captain by teammates
  • Displays escapability and pocket presence, can extend plays and find receivers downfield
  • Cool customer in the clutch, engineered game-winning drives against ranked opponents
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lean frame raises questions about ability to withstand punishment at the next level
  • Accuracy wanes on short throws, needs to improve touch and ball placement in the quick game
  • Turnover-prone, needs to cut down on risky throws and improve decision-making
  • Raw in terms of reading complex defenses, will need time to adjust to NFL coverages
  • Mechanics can get sloppy under pressure, leading to errant throws
Scouting Report: Summary
A gunslinger with wheels, King brings an explosive element to the quarterback position that will have NFL scouts salivating. His ability to stress defenses both vertically with his cannon arm and horizontally with his 4.4 speed makes him a scheme-diverse prospect. King's quick release and ability to deliver strikes from various arm angles will translate well to the next level, where getting the ball out quickly is paramount.

However, King is still a work in progress in terms of consistency and decision-making. His tendency to play "hero ball" leads to turnovers, and he'll need to learn when to take the check-down or throw the ball away. His frame is also a concern, as he'll need to add bulk to withstand the rigors of an NFL season. King's accuracy on short and intermediate throws must improve for him to become a complete NFL quarterback.

King profiles as a high-ceiling, developmental prospect who could benefit from time in an NFL quarterback room. His rare physical tools and playmaking ability make him an intriguing project for teams with established veteran quarterbacks.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
