Jalen Rivers from Oakleaf High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Rivers opted to join Miami (FL).In 2020 as a freshman Rivers saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 31 snaps for the Hurricanes. He allowed no QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing the majority of his snaps at tight tackle, and the rest at left tackle.
As a sophomore in 2021 he played in just 3 games and a total of 159 snaps. He conceded just 3 QB hurries, no QB hits, and one sack while playing at left guard.
In 2022 as a junior Rivers saw action in 9 games and totaled 631 snaps. He gave up 9 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and 2 sacks while playing at left guard.
In 2023 as a senior Rivers saw action in 12 games and played a total of 812 snaps for the Hurricanes. He allowed 6 QB hurries, 6 QB hits, and 2 sacks while playing at left tackle.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Cerebral player, quick to react to twists and stunts up front, and Rivers shows an excellent understanding of angles when moving out as a run blocker.
- Shows a good feel for combo blocks, and he displays good quickness and flexibility when moving to the second level, capable of sealing the back side on reach blocks
- Fires out of his stance with a good pad level, consistently winning at the point of attack.
- Attacks his man, playing with a wide base and the lateral agility to mirror, sustain and shuffle to help inside. Has the size, strength and quick feet to be effective as a position run-blocker.
- Rivers flashes power and nastiness in the run game, able to win at the point of attack and athletic enough to get out as a pulling blocker before landing blocks on the move at the second level.
- Fires off the snap quickly, and he shows the flexibility to get out and seal on reach blocks. He’s at his best, however, in the phone booth.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Has inconsistent quickness and lacks the natural burst to maintain balance and block in space. Extends his arms, but has soft hands and doesn't jolt rushers.
- Has enough power in the run game, but at times Rivers seems to lack a mean streak.
- While he’s solid as an athlete, he’s more comfortable moving forward as a run blocker than setting in pass protection, as he too often relies solely on his initial punch to stand up pass rushers instead of moving his feet.
