Draft Profile: Bio
Olakitan "Kitan" Oladapo, born to Funke and Akin of Nigerian descent, grew up immersed in sports, initially playing soccer, baseball, and basketball. In sixth grade, he transitioned from soccer to football, starting on defense as a linebacker before shifting to cornerback in seventh grade. Oladapo attended Central Catholic High School in Portland, where he played wide receiver and cornerback, helping his team reach the 2016 state finals. As a senior in 2017, he achieved second-team All-State and first-team All-Conference honors, making 32 tackles, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions, leading his team to a 9-3 record and another playoff appearance.

Despite his high school success, Oladapo was a no-star recruit and went largely unnoticed by college recruiting services. Oregon State offered him a preferred walk-on spot, which he accepted. During his redshirt year, he switched from cornerback to safety, a position he had never played before. Oladapo leveraged an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic, returning for a sixth season in 2023. Known for frequently changing his hair color for games, he graduated with a degree in design and innovation management from Oregon State in May 2023 and accepted an invitation to the 2024 Senior Bowl.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • He’s a willing and capable hitter in run support and closes fast to make plays against quick screens.
  • Patient and flexible in his drops and looks natural in space. Aggressive with an active playing style to work through the action - doesn't back down against the run
  • Has good body control and balance to redirect and break down in the open field.
  • Has quick feet and excellent change-of-direction ability, capable of mirroring quickness underneath.
  • He’s also very good in zone coverage, showing a great understanding of routes and the ability to close quickly.
  • Displays excellent run support with strong tackling abilities and physical play at the line.
  • Exceptional closing speed and burst, which allow him to disrupt plays effectively.
  • Displays a keen instinct for the ball, showcasing above-average ball skills when positioned well.
  • Capable of executing blitzes from the interior and the edge with impact.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Sometimes exhibits stiffness in transitions, affecting his ability to change direction quickly.
  • Inconsistencies in tackling technique could be exploited at the professional level.
  • At times, gets caught focusing too much on the quarterback, leading to missed coverage assignments.
  • Struggles to handle faster receivers in deep coverage due to average long-speed.
  • Can be overly aggressive, leading to missed or broken tackles in open field scenarios.
Scouting Report: Summary
Kitan Oladapo projects as a day two pick with the potential to bring immediate upside as a box safety at the prol level. His run defense is close to elite, showing an ability to fill gaps and meet ball-carriers with force. His toolkit includes strong blitz capabilities and reliable tackling in traffic. Nevertheless, his lateral mobility and transition quickness need enhancement to match up effectively in man coverage against the NFL's faster, route-savvy receivers.

While Oladapo exhibits a nice closing burst and effective play recognition, his ability to handle vertical threats and manage assignments in deep coverage raises concerns. NFL teams will need to consider his fit carefully, possibly limiting his role to scenarios less dependent on single-high safety responsibilities.

Overall, Oladapo fits the mold of a physical, downhill safety with core special teams value, likely earning snaps in sub-packages focused on run defense and tight end coverage. His ability to adapt to the professional game’s speed and complexity will be key. If he can refine his coverage mechanics and improve his field awareness, Oladapo has the ceiling of a solid NFL starter.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
