Alex Austin attended Long Beach Poly High School and was rated a 3-star prospect by 247 Sports with a scout's rating of 0.800, going unranked by ESPN. Following high school, Austin opted to join Oregon State.In 2019 as a freshman Austin saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 98 snaps at cornerback for the Beavers. He recorded just 5 tackles, one assist, while adding no stops. In coverage Austin notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and a QB rating when targetted of 80.1.
