Sean Shaw Jr. from Jones High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Shaw Jr. opted to join Iowa State.In 2019 as a freshman Shaw Jr. saw action in 11 games for the Cyclones as he made 15 receptions for 231 yards for an average of 15.4 yards per reception, with 5 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 137.9.
As a sophomore in 2020 he played 12 games and had 21 catches for 212 yards for an average of 10.1 yards per catch, with one TD, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 94.8.
As a junior in 2021 he played 11 games and hauled in just 9 catches for just 84 yards for an average of 9.3 yards per catch, with one TD, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 104.5.
As a senior in 2022 he played 12 games and had 16 catches for just 149 yards for an average of 9.3 yards per catch, 2 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 93.9.
After the end of the season Shaw Jr. transferred to Texas State where as a fifth year senior in 2023 he played 10 games and had just 12 catches for just 101 yards for an average of 8.4 yards per catch, no TDs, and QB rating when targeted of 81.0.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Goes up high for jump balls. Good flexibility and reach to snatch back-shoulder throws.
- He’s coordinated with soft, reliable hands, and Shaw shows the ability to adjust to balls thrown behind him, as well as a knack for digging out low throws.
- Balanced, savvy route runner with top field awareness, setting up and selling routes beautifully.
- Often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed.
- Shaw catches the ball with his large, soft hands and is tough. Deceptive jets and a smooth route runner.
- Has the size, length, and strength to defeat press jams. Can make the spectacular catch. A decent open-field runner with some agility and the ability to break tackles.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.
- Shaw also lacks suddenness as a route runner, and that is a potential issue at the next level.
- Whilst Shaw is at his best running downfield, he lacks the elite top-end speed or acceleration to be a field stretcher.
