Scouting Report: Strengths
- Demus has strong hands and is extremely competitive, and Demus has an innate sense of timing when it comes to elevating and high-pointing balls.
- Ideal size X type receiver at 6-4 215lbs, who also has experience in the the big slot role
- Can be a matchup issue for smaller cornerbacks - who he can outjump and overpower
- Very good straight-line speed and is difficult to keep up with he hits his top gear
- He has quick feet and good body control, allowing him to gear down and quickly get in and out of cuts. His hands are good, and he’s a creative runner after the catch with the elusiveness to slip tackles in space.
- He tracks the ball well downfield and consistently runs under long throws.
- Thriving on physicality, he’s a contested-catch specialist with a knack for warding off defenders while the ball is in the air. He has strong hands and the ability to wrestle the ball away from defenders.
- A force working up the seam, he accelerates quickly and glides once he gets going.
- Has enough upper-body strength and tenacity to be very effective as a downfield blocker. Is not shy about taking on his man, provides some pop and will open a running lane for his back at the next level.
- Generally sure-handed receiver capable of making difficult catches in traffic over the middle or one on one down the sideline.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- His route running is only average - he's been able to get away with relying on his athletic skills thus far - something he'll be unable to do in the pro game
- His speed is good but not elite - will not blow by NFL corners
- Demus also had problems with drops when coming back to the action. Despite his size, he has had some issues against press coverage, sometimes spending too much time hand fighting at the line of scrimmage.
- Was leading the Big Ten as a receiver before blowing out his ACL - he'll need to demonstrate to scouts that he's fully healed
Scouting Report: Summary
Dontay Demus Jr. is a good pro prospect who has pretty much everything you look for in a pro-style X-type receiver. He's big and tall with great soft hands and good long speed to eat into DBs cushion deep. The only issue keeping him out of the best WRs in the class is his injury - if he can show he's fully back to form and put up good numbers in 2022 expect him to be looked at as a possible first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.Dontay Demus Jr. percentiles vs other Wide Receivers (NFL Combine historically - higher value represents better perfomance)
