Scouting Report: Strengths
- Benson has an excellent feel for working off blockers and knowing how and when to counter as the play goes on.
- He shows good speed and closing burst when blitzing.
- He’s effective in pursuit when chasing down backs as a run defender, and Benson has the athleticism to cover a lot of ground when dropping into coverage.
- Closes quickly on relatively immobile quarterbacks. A consistently heavy hitter who flashes explosiveness and the ability to separate the ball.
- Tougher between the tackles than many expect. Fluid and quick drop into zone, covers enough ground to be Tampa-2 "MIKE" and knows where the markers are.
- He’s an instinctive and active chase-and-tackle 4-3 Will, with the speed to go sideline to sideline. He takes excellent angles. Benson also has an innate sense for shooting gaps as a run defender.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- He’s more of a grab-and-drag tackler who could stand to be more violent as a hitter.
- As a run defender, he’s too much of a grab-and-drag tackler, lacking violence and too frequently allowing running backs to escape.
- Shorter than ideal and is easily engulfed by blockers near the line of scrimmage. Minimal anchor at the point of attack and was too often knocked backward or off his feet.
