Draft Profile: Bio
Yannick Smith was better known for basketball than football at Summerville High School, earning South Carolina 5A Player of the Year honors on the court before a breakout senior football season with 62 catches, 1,387 yards and 17 touchdowns for a 13-1 team. He was also a 6-foot-3 guard who won 2024 All-FNL boys basketball Player of the Year honors before signing with East Carolina as a three-star football prospect.Smith played in 13 games with three starts as a freshman in 2024, catching 25 passes for 434 yards, then earned third-team All-AAC honors in 2025 with 44 catches, 583 yards and five touchdowns, including a 146-yard game against BYU. He transferred to SMU in January with two years of eligibility remaining.
Smith has been a starter all season for a 4-1 SMU team in 2026, highlighted by a 79-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the fourth quarter of the 27-24 win at Florida State.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Basketball body control helps him win at the catch point, with 11 of 17 contested catches in 2025
- Dangerous after the catch, turning a short throw into a 79-yard score at Florida State
- Wins downfield and at the intermediate level from outside alignments
- Big 6-foot-2, 208-pound frame for an outside receiver
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Hands are a recurring issue, with four drops across 2025 and 2026
- Separation on quick routes is a struggle against tight coverage
- Streaky production, with under 60 yards in three of four games this fall
- Almost exclusively an outside receiver, so slot versatility is unproven
- Still raw as a route runner after focusing on basketball for most of high school
Scouting Report: Summary
Smith is a basketball player who discovered football late and has been learning on the fly ever since, and the athletic gifts that made him a 5A Player of the Year on the court are obvious on the field. He has size, body control and the ability to make plays after the catch, as he showed on his 79-yard catch-and-run touchdown to beat Florida State. He was a productive starter at East Carolina and has made a smooth transition to SMU's offense. However, he is still raw. His route running lacks polish, particularly on short and quick-breaking routes where he struggles to separate against tight coverage, and his hands have been unreliable, with four drops over the last two seasons. His production has been streaky, with fewer than 60 yards in three of four games this season, and almost all of his snaps come on the outside.
Overall, Smith is a developmental outside receiver with intriguing size and athleticism who would benefit from another year of college football. If he comes out early, he projects as a seventh-round or undrafted receiver whose size and athleticism would make him a worthwhile practice squad project.

For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
