Draft Profile: Bio
A five-star recruit coming out of high school with great bloodlines - his grandfather played football at Purdue and also for five seasons in the NFL, before suffering a career-ending injury. His dad played football at Purdue, college baseball at Triton College, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. So he's hoping to follow in the family tradition.Stingley joined LSU and had an immediate impact as a freshman he logged recorded 38 tackles, 21 pass defenses, and 6 interceptions, and also received both All-SEC and All-American nominations. He continued with 27 tackles, a forced fumble and 5 pass defenses in the COVID shortened 2020 season where he again was handed All-SEC and All-American nominations.
Stingley's junior year in 2021 has been somewhat of a disappointment, where after playing only three games he was ruled out indefinitely with a foot injury
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Supreme athlete with crazy physical gifts - runs the forty in the high 4.2's and is as quick as fast
- Fantastic in man coverage - one of our top-rated corners over the last two years
- Good agility and balance when shadowing his target. Competitive player.
- Physical downfield and matches up well with bigger receivers. Tough and fiery with very good competitiveness. High-effort player.
- Can play in all systems - but will be drafted as a man/press corner
- Able to give receivers a big cushion and still manages to break up the pass
- Very aggressive attacking receiver blocks and tackles like a safety.
- Takes accurate angles to the ball carrier. A strong, aggressive tackler and doesn't back down against the run.
- Gets an effective jam on the receiver and has loose enough hips to turn and run.
- He attacks the catch-point aggressively swatting the ball away - when he has a chance for an interception he usually makes it - has good hands
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freaks List at # 9 -- In 2018 the five-star cornerback measured 6-foot-1 and 193 pounds. He clocked a 4.30-second 40 time and a 42-inch vertical to go with a 4.28 shuttle.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- He hasn't played a lot of zone and when has played it looks only average not remotely dominant as in man coverage. We rate him only good as a zone corner
- Seems timid in zone coverage - needs to be more aggressive
- Injuries are a huge question for Stingley - he's only been fully healthy for one season. He will need a complete medical signoff on his ankle and foot before teams will risk spending a high pick
- NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
- Has never quite played up to his athletic potential - considering his gifts we would have hoped he could have put better numbers and consistent performances
Scouting Report: Summary
The supremely athletically gifted and talented Stingley has established himself as the best cornerback in college football and will likely be a top-five pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he however doesn't come with risks: The most obvious one being - how much time will he actually play - especially considering he's missed nearly half his college games with injuries? Secondly, he really only plays man coverage and will be wasted in a zone coverage team.He has the talent to go in the top three but we consider the risk too great to warrant a selection that high - we have a top 10 grade on Stingley - but no higher.
