After high school, Petras opted to join Iowa.In 2018 as a freshman Petras saw action in just one game for the Hawkeyes as he threw for no yards on one attempt with a completion percent of 0 for an average of 0.0 yards per pass, with no TDs, while taking no sacks, and only QB rating of 39.6.
In 2019 as a sophomore he played in just 2 games as he passed for only 25 yards on 10 attempts with a completion percent of 60 for an average of 2.5 yards per pass, with no TDs, while also taking no sacks, and putting up QB rating of 64.6.

- Good (not elite) arm strength and can easily make all the NFL throws with effortless deep passes.
- Big athlete with good height and stands tall in the pocket to survey. the field. Uses good technique, squaring his shoulders to the target and stepping into his throws.
- Petras has a quick release and a live arm, delivering tight spirals, and Petras shows good touch at the intermediate levels
- Most of the time he is at ease mentally in the pocket, and he’s willing to stand in and absorb hits while making a throw.
- Is built like a linebacker, and he has the plus arm strength to match. He’s at his best with ball placement in catch-and-run situations, bubble screens and quick slants.
- Petras has enough arm strength to throw the deep out as well.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- His mechanics are hit-or-miss as Petras struggles to remain consistent. His stride is inconsistent, leading to sporadic accuracy.
- Doesn’t throw as well on the move, especially when targeting receivers outside the numbers.
- Too often fails to give receivers a chance to make a play after the catch. High completion percentage padded by many quick screens.
