Derrick Deese Jr is the son of former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Derrick Deese who played wide receiver at high school. He wasn't highly recruited and so opted for the JUCO route at Golden West College where he caught 37 passes for 658 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017. In 2018 he transferred to San Jose State and redshirted the season.

After two underwhelming seasons in 2019 and 2020 where he totaled just 419 Yds, Deese broke out with a dominating season in 2021. He caught 47 passes with 720 Yds and scored 4 TDs with a 86.4 QB rating when targetted. He was is named as one of the eight semifinalists for the 2021John Mackey National Tight End Award.

  • Lacks elite power for the position and looks maxed-out from a strength perspective.

  • Average size and power for the position; won't overwhelm with his strength.
  • Effort blocker who gets in the way more than he mauls.
  • Doesn't break many tackles or do enough after contact.
  • Lacks elite power for the position and looks maxed-out from a strength perspective.
Scouting Report: Summary
Derrick Deese Jr. has good soft hands and runs efficient routes like a traditional wideout he however is a little undersized and is only average a blocker and lacks the speed to be a deep threat.
We expect Deese to carve out an NFL career but doubt if he can become a three-down NFL starter and as a result will probably be selected in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.
