Draft Profile: Bio
Dominique Robinson was a high school receiver who earned first-team all-county honors, was the team’s MVP, and earned first-team All-Federal League honors. He was recruited as an 'athlete ' and recruited by Miami Red Hawks to play quarterback. He spent his first three seasons in the MAC playing wide receiver, catching 27 passes for 452 yards and four touchdowns but in 2020 switched position in an attempt to become an edge rusher.
In 2020 he saw action in all three games and on 109 defensive snaps logged nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks on the year.
In his first full year of defensive action, Robinson on 431 snaps totaled 28 tackles, added 8.5 for loss, had 4.5 sacks, and impressed with 28 total QB pressures. As a result, he was handed third-team All-Mid American Conference honors and a Senior Bowl invite.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List for 2021 - "He’s grown to over 6-4, 256 pounds, has an 82.5-inch wingspan, bench presses 350; vertical jumped 34 inches and clocked a 4.62 40. His 4.31 pro agility time also is excellent."
- Was outstanding when given a chance to shine at the Senior Bowl practices. Looked dominant in drills against the top offensive tackles in the draft
- -Possesses accurate snap anticipation and timing to beat blockers off the edge.
- Elite length and athletic prospect with explosion to get a step on offensive tackles around the edge
- Good flexibility and bend on the edge - maintains power through his movements
- Experience as a WR gives him a natural feel coverage and can track backs coming on delayed routes with ease
- Stong quick hands and a developed swipe move - with the ability to squeeze through small lanes to get to the QB
- Has fluid footwork to redirect, reverse momentum and close with a burst. Regularly first off the ball with good snap anticipation.
- Nice change-of-direction agility and straight-line speed to contain.
- Size, strength, and versatility should push him into the top 100 picks.
- Very good lateral ability and offers some versatility, rushing from a two-and three-point stance with the playing speed to stand up in space. Flashes strength as a bull rusher and his energy doesn't plateau.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Converted WR who was recently only 220 Lbs and so may not have the frame to get much stronger
- Not dominant as a run defender and can be pushed aside by power4ful offensive lineman on drive blocks. Used mainly as pass-rushing specialist college - didn't play many running downs
- Doesn't play with enough leverage and plays too high at times
- Only one full year of playing time as an edge rusher and it shows - his skills are very underdeveloped - has only one decent pass rush move. Relies on athleticism only
- Lacks overpowering strength and can stick to blocks
- Often the first player off the snap, especially when lined up over the ball, and his length, effort, and short-area quickness pressures double teams and helps penetrate gaps
- Usually stands up against the run but is very pursuit-conscious and will take unneeded wide angles.
Scouting Report: Summary
Dominique Robinson is a very raw and inexperienced prospect but one with elite athletic upside which he showcased at the Senior Bowl and the combine, where he put up impressive numbers. He's had just a single complete year of play as an edge rusher, has almost no experience as a run defender, and will require significant coaching for him to become anything more than a bit part third-down specialist at the next level. We expect Robinson may be over-drafted due to his athletic traits and upside but currently isn't a complete player and think it's a stretch for him to offer value any higher than the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
