Draft Profile: Bio
Doug Nester from Spring Valley High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Nester opted to join Virginia Tech.

In 2019 as a freshman Nester saw action in 12 games and played a total of 585 snaps for the Hokies. He allowed just 3 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and 3 sacks while playing at right guard.

As a sophomore in 2020 he played in 8 games and a total of 375 snaps. He conceded just one QB hurry, 3 QB hits, and no sacks while playing most of his snaps at right guard.

After the end of the season Nester transferred to West Virginia where as a junior Nester saw action in 13 games and totaled 807 snaps. He gave up an impressive 8 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and 3 sacks while playing at right guard.

In 2022 as a senior Nester saw action in 11 games and played a total of 807 snaps for the Mountaineers. He allowed an impressive 9 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and one sack while playing most of his snaps at right guard.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Nester plays with good leverage despite his taller frame, and he’s a surprisingly good mover for his size, showing fluidity and flexibility when blocking on the second level.
  • Has the natural power to move defenders at the point of attack. He also has the agility and speed to get out in front and land blocks at the second level. He also shows a good understanding of angles when climbing to the second level.
  • Has a strong, flexible core, and the ability to absorb and anchor against the bull rush as a pass protector.
  • Is effective when asked to pull, showing the agility, speed, and overall range to get out as a lead blocker, where Nester locates defenders and shows the ability to adjust and land blocks against linebackers.
  • In the run game, he plays with a mean streak and does a nice job generating a push at the initial point of attack. Nester can get outside and does a decent job landing blocks in space.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Heavy-footed, and his technique needs to get much better. Too often in pass protection, Nester was bending at the waist and lunging rather than moving his feet, a flaw that will be exposed at the NFL level whether he plays inside or out.
  • His physical gifts were enough to get by against collegiate opponents, but he had trouble with bull rushers when facing quality competition, which is potentially a problem in the NFL.
  • Has good-not-great feet. Dealing with speed on the edge will likely be a problem, especially because he’s more comfortable moving forward as a run blocker than he is retreating as a pass protector.
  • Protecting on an island will be a challenge against rushers who can dip and bend around the edge. He’ll also struggle against good counter moves; he often gets into position on his initial set before failing to sufficiently adjust.
