Following high school, Hergel opted to join North Dakota.

In 2019 as a freshman Hergel saw action in 4 games and played a total of 251 snaps for the Fighting Hawks. He allowed just 3 QB hurries, one QB hit, and 2 sacks while playing most of his snaps at right guard.

As a sophomore in 2020 he played in 5 games and a total of 349 snaps. He conceded just 3 QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing at right guard.

After the end of the season Hergel transferred to Texas State where as a junior Hergel saw action in 12 games and totaled 859 snaps. He gave up 6 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and one sack while playing at right guard.

In 2022 as a senior Hergel saw action in 12 games and played a total of 850 snaps for the Bobcats. He allowed 7 QB hurries, no QB hits, and one sack while playing at right guard.

After season's end Hergel transferred to Boston College where as a fifth year senior Hergel saw action in 12 games and played a total of 868 snaps for the Eagles. He allowed just 2 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and no sacks while playing at left guard.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Displays good awareness when it comes to reading moving bodies, effectively reacting and adjusting. Hergel also shows a good feel for combo blocks.
  • He will have a chance to develop as a right tackle or possibly inside at guard, where Hergel could be an interesting prospect for a zone-blocking team. If nothing else, that versatility is enough to make him at least a quality reserve.
  • Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #73. He wrote "Hergel, a 2021 All-Sun Belt honorable mention selection, vertical-jumped 34 inches this offseason and broad-jumped 9-4. His 40 time was 5.01. He power-cleaned 385 and benched 500."
  • Outstanding on reach blocks, showing good initial quickness and flexibility to seal the backside. He’s a heady player who is quick to recognize and react to twists and stunts up front, and he shows a good sense of timing on combo blocks.
  • Plays with natural leverage and has the strength to anchor against the bull rush. He also packs a violent initial punch that can stand up pass rushers.
  • Has the natural power to move defenders at the point of attack. He also has the agility and speed to get out in front and land blocks at the second level. He also shows a good understanding of angles when climbing to the second level.
  • Hergel thrives on physicality, often out-grappling bigger defensive linemen and winning in the phone booth with tenacity and upper-body strength.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Can struggle to stay engaged, especially on the second level. His hand placement can be sloppy, costing him power.
  • His physical gifts were enough to get by against collegiate opponents, but Hergel had trouble with bull rushers when facing quality competition, which is potentially a problem in the NFL.
  • For all of his physical gifts, often gets terribly sloppy, especially in pass protection.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
