As a sophomore in 2020 he played in 5 games and a total of 349 snaps. He conceded just 3 QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing at right guard.

Scouting Report: Strengths
  • He’s a coordinated athlete who can win at the point of attack in the run game, and Hergel can also move to consistently land blocks at the second level.
  • Has the strong leg drive to create movement at the line of scrimmage, consistently putting defenders on the ground.
  • When his hand placement is right, he has the strong grip that allows him to manhandle opponents. Hergel plays with a mean streak and keeps the nastiness going through the whistle.
  • Has an intriguing blend of size and quickness. He fires off the ball and shows good power at the point of attack, capable of generating movement up front.
  • Hergel moves much better than his relatively squat, square frame would suggest. Fluid and flexible, he’s capable of moving in space and latching on to moving targets at the second level.
  • Has fluid body control with loose hips. Physical and tough with good effort in the run game. Plays with a finishing attitude with an aggressive, nasty temperament.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • While he’s solid as an athlete, he’s more comfortable moving forward as a run blocker than setting in pass protection, as Hergel too often relies solely on his initial punch to stand up pass rushers instead of moving his feet.
  • Can struggle to stay engaged, especially on the second level. His hand placement can be sloppy, costing him power.
  • Is a bit underpowered, often coming off the line of scrimmage too high and struggling to generate movement. Hergel might be no more than a wall-off, angle blocker.
