Shawn Murphy from Unity Reed Lions High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Murphy joined Alabama after being heavily recruited.In 2022 as a freshman Murphy saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 5 snaps at linebacker for the Crimson Tide. He recorded no tackles, no assists, while adding no stops.
As a sophomore for the Crimson Tide in 2023 Murphy played in 3 games and took part in 18 snaps for the Crimson Tide. He recorded just 3 tackles, 2 assists, while adding 2 stops.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Murphy has value as an inside blitzer as well, showing the initial burst to shoot through gaps and disrupt the backfield.
- He’s a capable blitzer with the ability to close quickly. He’s also very good in coverage, rangy with good awareness in zone coverage, and fluid and fast enough to run with most tight ends.
- Keeps feet moving after initial contact. Jumps inside as a counter to typical rush, but needs to show a larger variety of moves.
- The talent is there as a sideline-to-sideline playmaker.
- Murphy has good quickness and an excellent understanding of angles, often beating blockers to the spot.
- Good athlete. Shows a natural feel for pass rushing. Very good lateral agility to shake pass blockers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Murphy lacks the speed of a chase and- tackle guy. He lacks twitch as a pass rusher and lacks the feet and flexibility to threaten around the edge.
- Murphy is on the small side and struggles to slip blocks; he’ll need to be covered up in order to make plays.
- He’s a grab-and-drag tackler and needs to be covered up by his defensive line in order to move freely against the run; he’s cooked if Murphy runs into blockers at the second level.
