Draft Profile: Bio
At high school, Kyle Philips chalked up 59 receptions for an outstanding 1,318 yards and 10 TDs and while playing defense made 26 tackles and 2 INTs. At the end of his senior campaign, he was graded a four-star prospect by all the major scouting services and received multiple scholarship offers - ultimately he opted to stay local and chose UCLA.

After seeing only limited action in his first year Philips saw action in all 7 games, with 6 starts in 2019, and chalked up 60 catches and 681 YDs along with 5 TDs on the year.

In 2020 as a junior Philips made 6 starts and pulled down 38 receptions and 370 Yds adding 2 TDs - with just a 67.1 QB rating when targeted on the year.

After a down year in 2020 Philips' senior season in 2021 was an outstanding one as he made starts and came down with 59 receptions with 739 YDs, 10 TDs, and a far more impressive 104.9 QB rating when targeted on the year. At the end of the season, he was named to the first-team All-Pac-12 squad and selected to the second-team All-Pac-12 team as a kick returner by Phil Steele.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed
  • Ideal size and body type for a slot receiver who runs elite sharp crisp routes
  • He proved his athleticscism at the NFL Combine where he made 33.5-inch vertical and a 10’4″ broad jump - better than the top-ranked WR prospects
  • Outstanding soft hands and overall ball skills. Will regularly manage to come down with underthrown balls - and can quickly become a quarterback's best friend
  • A very smart player with a high football IQ - will instinctively manage to find gaps in coverage. Has the awareness of the action to know when to break his routes short
  • Useful player on screens where he can use his lateral quickness to the best of his ability
  • Flashes the foot quickness and toughness to handle slot duties at the next level and lines up all over the field. Dangerous with the ball in his hands.
  • Does a nice job locating and tracking deep passes and is a legitimate vertical threat. Willing to go up and attack the ball.
  • Willing and efficient blocker who play without fear for his personnel welfare
  • Adds an extra ability as a an excellent and dynamic put returner
  • Lacks the ideal size, but has a similar body type to Antonio Brown
  • A slippery runner with elusive footwork. Has little to no wasted movements between the reception and burst upfield.
  • Has elite balance tight-roping the sideline and in-and-out of his breaks, showing excellent start-stop ability and burst
  • An impressive athlete with very quick acceleration to reach his top speed quickly. Very good body control and smooth movements
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.
  • Has only average long speed - ran a disappointing 4.58 at the combine and is neither big nor tall. Limited athletic upside
  • Philips struggles to separate deep and may struggle in press coverage at the next level
  • Is decent as a YAC guy although will not break any tackles and usually goes down on first contact
  • Lacks the versatility to play multiple receiver positions - limited to purely a slot role
  • Despite never playing against top-level competition in college his production was only ever good not elite
  • Has only average height and overall length. Lacks an initial burst off the line of scrimmage and has more build-up speed than track wheels. Limited explosiveness and flexibility and will struggle to separate against pro defensive backs
Scouting Report: Summary
UCLA's Kyle Philips is a solid NFL prospect with limited upside. He is an outstanding technician who runs outstanding routes, has very good hands, and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He however is limited with his height-weight speed numbers and for that reason will be restricted to a third-down slot role player at the next level.

Expect Philips to carve himself a nice career as a Wes Welker type player in the pros - who can also make a significant contribution as a punt returner. It's likely Philips will hear his name called in the fifth or sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
