Draft Profile: Bio
Kalon Barnes was awarded a four-star recruiting grade after helping Silsbee High School to 7-5 record in 2017. While playing both ways he had 600 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, four return touchdowns, and four interceptions on defense. Barnes also ran track where he was a two-time Texas 100m and 200m state champ, owned the Texas High School 100 meter record with a time of 10.22 in 2017. He was highly recruited and chose Baylor over Georgia, Kansas State, Missouri, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M.Barnes was recruited as a wide receiver but quickly changed to cornerback ahead of the 2018 season and played sparingly as a freshman. The following year he saw action in all 14 games on the year and finished with 22 total tackles (8 solo), 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, 5 pass breakups, and a QB rating when targeted of 111.3.
In a shortened season in 2020 as a sophomore Barnes played in six games, making five starts, and chalked up 13 tackles, including 2.0 TFLs, three pass breakups, an INT, and a QB rating when targeted of 59.8.
Barnes played on 523 snaps as a senior in 2021 and while making ten starts he logged 23 tackles, five pass breakups, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a QB rating when targeted of 100.8.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Incredible electric sprinter's speed - Recorded a 4.23 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, which is the second-fastest time in combine history. John Ross famously clocked the fastest 40 at 4.22 seconds.
- Elite athlete with the quickness to play trail coverage and the length to and leaping ability to challenge vertically
- Willing to contribute and throw his body around in run defense
- Has decent ball skills and displays the instinct and co-ordination of a WR - a position he played in high school
- Has good awareness and quick feet. Fluid backpedal, aggressive attacking the receiver from the snap, and flashes occasional spectacular ball skills.
- Tracks and plays the ball well, and has decent hands for the interception
- Rare hand-eye coordination and agility, vision, and third gear to make a living in the return game.
- Good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. Dangerous with the ball in his hands.
- Should excel as a zone defender because of his closing speed to wrap receivers after the catch.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- A very raw unpolished player who doesn't look comfortable at the position
- Relies on speed alone to mask his sub-par technique
- In man coverage lacks the skills and fails to put a decent jam at the line of scrimmage
- Doesn't stay close in coverage and leaves too big a cushion which leaves him open to be beaten on come back routes
- His tackling is not particularly impressive and although he gives the effort often fails to wrap up
- In deep coverage loses the ball and relies on just trailing the receiver - bites on too many head fakes
- Has missed time with injury - will need to medically check out to be worth a high pick
- NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
- Fails to maintain inside technique in man coverage
Scouting Report: Summary
Kalon Barnes is an incredible possessing genuine Olympic speed, decent length, and a high motor, he however is raw at the position as he is fast. Barnes struggles in man coverage despite his speed and lacks a number of the basic skills you expect in a potential pro prospect. He at the moment can only be viewed as a developmental prospect as he doesn't have the skills to hold up at the next level.Barnes will probably be over-drafted due to his eye-opening forty-time but we think his value is capped as a sixth or seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
