Draft Profile: Bio
Kellen Diesch was a four-star recruit from Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas who was rated as the No.105 player in the nation. he chose Texas A&M over Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas. He redshirted his freshman season and then saw no significant action the remaining years at Texas which led to him moving to Arizona State in 2020 as a graduate transfer.His first year at Arizona was impressive as he only surrendered a single sack on 261 plays (in four games) which led to him being named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list. He was also named to the Pac-12's all-conference team as a second-team tackle.
In his first year where he played a full season of 13 games he had a series of impressive outings at left tackle where he would give up only two sacks on 768 offensive plays. Diesch was invited to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl as a result where he will get a chance to showcase his talent for NFL scouts.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Has pro-level movement skills, despite only one season of college ball
- Has good footwork and technique. Balanced and agile pass protection set with excellent hand placement.
- Very strong for his 300 pounds
- Has excellent balance and has quick feet
- Has a natural feel for pass protection rarely gets beat on double moves
- He has the quickness and growth potential, long arms, and powerful base to be one of the most popular players in predraft film sessions. If he impresses in private workouts, he could climb draft boards.
- Quick out of his stance with the footwork to be effective in front of screens. Willing to get out in front of ballcarriers to take out defensive backs and linebackers.
- Quick-footed with smooth movement skills to cover a large area. Rangy with above-average lateral ability. Bursts off the snap and sets up quickly with little wasted motion.
- Tall, long, athletic pass protector. Generally gets out of three-point stance with good knee bend and a wide base.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Not as heavy as you would like for a pro left tackle could do with adding 20lbs to handle more powerful NFL pass rushers
- Limits ability to mirror by leaning forward with his upper body and neglecting his lower body.
- He is a specialist as a pass protector but could do with improving his run blocking technique
- Will punch at smaller defenders instead of latching on and is more of a mauler than mover in the running game. Can improve maintaining outside leverage when doubling the nose. Ducks his head and gets too upright, causing him to fall off second-level blocks.
- Susceptible to power rushers - may get bull-rushed by pro defensive tackles on the inside
- Needs to prove his worth in a straight-ahead running game as he has limited experience
Scouting Report: Summary
Kellen Diesch is a quality NFL-caliber tackle who has excellent pass blocking skills and a natural feel in protection. He hasn't seen a lot of playing time but we don't see this as a big issue since in the games we have seen he has performed admirably and displayed a high-level skill set.He isn't a perfect prospect however and has limited strength which he will need to improve in an NFL weight room.
We see Diesch as a player with a very high floor and a moderate ceiling who could quite easily have a nice career in the pros as a starting tackle.
He'll likely hear his name called in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
