Draft Profile: Bio
Mykael Wright played both wide receiver and corner while at high school - he was the top-ranked cornerback in the nation and No. 19 overall in the ESPN300, a Consensus four-star prospect, and top 85 player in the country by ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports. He was predictably heavily recruited and opted to join Oregon in 2019.

As a freshman, Wright saw action in 14 games and played a total of 306 snaps on defense. He had one interception and allowed just eight receptions on 23 targets, with an amazing 28.4 QB rating when targetted. He also had one interception, four pass breakups, and made 21 tackles, including two for loss. At season's end, he was given a spot on the Athletic Freshman All-America second team and handed a coaches Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention. As a kick returner, he was just the third player in program history to return two kickoffs for a TD in a single season. He totaled 10 kickoffs for 380 yards on the year

As a sophomore in 2020 he started all seven games at corner and finished with 25 tackles, including 18 solo, and allowed a QB rating of 103.6 when targetted. despite this down year, he received a spot on the AP Pac-12 All-Conference first team.

In his final season at Oregon in 2021 Wright finished third on the team with 65 total tackles, ninth-most among Pac-12 defensive backs. He also added five passes defensed, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and the second interception of his career. He also surrendered a QB rating when targetted of 98.1 on 61 targets. As a returner he added 12 kickoffs for 332 yards, - averaging 27.7 yards per return with a long runback of 56 yards.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Fluid player who transitions nicely from his backpedal in man coverage
  • Much better in zone than man - keeps his eyes with the QB and is generally pretty good biting on pump fakes
  • Has the versatility to play slot coverage as well on the outside
  • Has good awareness and quick feet. Fluid backpedal, aggressive attacking the receiver from the snap, and flashes spectacular ball skills.
  • Very good athleticism and flexibility. Has plus speed for the position and a second gear with good recovery speed to make up for missed plays.
  • Aware zone corner back who is also adept in man coverage, flashing physical hand punch at the line and straight-line speed to stay with receivers downfield.
  • Changes directions with ease and has the frame to hold up at any spot in the secondary.
  • Has excellent overall ball skills and good hands when going for an interception
  • Offers skills on special teams - is an excellent kick returner
  • Plays the ball as if it was thrown for him, showing burst back to the ball as well as good timing for the jump ball.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • He's not a tenacious tacker and plays the position with a wide receiver's mentality.
  • Inconsistent in run support and not an elite tackler - due to his slight frame
  • Has only average speed (timed at 4.57 in the combine) - even less impressive when you consider he is only 5-10 and 173 lbs
  • Doesn't always recognize receivers routes until it's too late - need to process the game quicker
  • Receivers can arm-bar downfield to create separation. He's too often caught peeking in the backfield and gives ground on double moves.
  • Suspect technician who too often lets the action come to him and energy and effort are too inconsistent.
  • NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
Scouting Report: Summary
Mykael Wright is a prospect that has seen his stock fall as a result of the combine - he ran a 4.57 40 while measuring in at 5' 10 1/2" and weighing just 173 lbs. His college production has been good but far from elite and has never managed to reproduce his first-year production levels. It looks like Wright will struggle to be drafted any higher than the sixth round in the 2022 NFL Draft unless a team puts significant value in his skills as a kick returner.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
