Draft Profile: Bio
Tyler Goodson received the Georgia Player of the Year award in his senior year of high school while running for 1,180 yards and 25 touchdowns, but despite this only was given a three-star recruiting grade. He joined Iowa for the 2019 season and made an impact immediately running for 638 yds as a freshman. As a sophomore, he improved on these numbers adding 762 yds and an All-Big Ten nod.Goodson's junior campaign resulted in him being named Third Team All-Big Ten by the media and Honorable Mention by the coaches. Goodson became the first Hawkeye to top 1,000 yards rushing this year since Akrum Wadley achieved that in 2017. He leads the team in rushing with 1,101 yards on 238 attempts for a 4.1 yard per carry average.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- His reported forty time of 4.5 is unlikely to be correct - was clocked running 22.1 mph week 1
- Is very shifty who is equally quick and fast.
- Willing blocker who doesn't shy from contact
- Regularly runs through arms tackles in the open field
- More of an outside runner than a between the tackles bull dozer
- Flashes initial burst and good lateral quickness to sidestep defenders or bounce runs outside with very good foot quickness. Displays very good feel as an inside and outside runner with an above-average vision to make sharp cuts - good patience· and footwork to pick through defenses.
- Possesses quick feet and elite straight-line speed. Improving patience as a runner, following pulling guards and makes good decisions on his cut.
- Has a very good stiff arm and is not afraid to use it
- Very versatile - has experience lining up a slot wide receiver
- Good receiver with soft hands and a natural feel for the passing game
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Has a lean frame and lacks ideal bulk or muscle for the position. Doesn't have great strength, lacking a power element to his game to break many tackles.
- Not an explosive back - will limit his upside at the next level
- Can easily be overpowered at the line of scrimmage - goes down to easy
- Despite getting a lot of carries at Iowa he never really dominated and averaged a solid but unspectacular 4.9 YPC
- Does not always read blocks behind pulling guards. He May not be big enough to move piles at the next level and has a tendency to bury his head too soon.
- Offers little in pass protection and poor technique cut blocking, fails to do more than slow down blitzers by laying down in front of them.
Scouting Report: Summary
Goodson has everything you look for in a smaller pro back he has impressive agility, can cut on a dime, and given the space can go the distance and will not be caught from behind. He also despite being just 199 lbs is surprisingly robust and often manages to stay on his feet when hit He, however, has areas of his game that require significant development in particular as a blocker where his technique is lacking and where he regularly gets blown up by pass rushers.The combine could make or break his stock as he will need to impress both in the strength and speed drills if he wants to be mentioned as a possibility in the top three rounds.
We consider Goodson a likely third/fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft who will add explosiveness to an NFL roster especially on passing downs, but whether he can become an every-down back in the NFL is debatable
