Draft Profile: Bio
Alex Birchmeier from Broad Run High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Birchmeier opted to join Penn State. In 2024 as a freshman Birchmeier saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 16 snaps for the Nittany Lions. He allowed no QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks while playing sparingly.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Quick feet to get inside of defensive tackles to wall off inside and reach linebackers at the second level.
- Exhibits good patience in pass protection, sitting back in his set rather than leaning and lunging.
- Anchors against larger defenders in the middle; resets hands to maintain distance. Athletic enough to help on nose tackle then pick up twist or late blitzer. Mirrors quick interior rushers. Looks to help the center when uncovered.
- In the run game, Birchmeier comes off the snap quickly and is excellent with hand placement. Birchmeier understands angles, and he displays impressive footwork in moving to the second level, usually getting in position to deliver blocks.
- Shows excellent awareness against twists and stunts, and he has the strong, flexible core and wide base to catch and handle moving defenders.
- Birchmeier will have a chance to develop as a right tackle or possibly inside at guard, where he could be an interesting prospect for a zone-blocking team. If nothing else, that versatility is enough to make him at least a quality reserve.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Birchmeier often sets too tall, which will be problematic against NFL speed-to-power rushers. He’s a bit underpowered in the run game, often coming off the ball too high and failing to play with proper leverage.
- Whiffs on blocks after beaten initially and lacks range and lateral quickness. Plays too high and without proper leverage, pad level and can be passive.
- Lacks ideal movement skills in the run game. He’ll get to the second level, but Birchmeier tends to lock on to a path toward his target and then struggles if he has to adjust.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
