Draft Profile: Bio
Logan Bruss was a multi-talented high school athlete who was a three-year letter winner in track, earning all-conference honors in the discus, also played basketball, and was a unanimous first-team all-state selection on the offensive line by the Associated Press as a senior. He was graded a three-star recruit by 247 Sports, ESPN, Rivals, and Scout and opted to join Wisconsin for the 2017 season. After redshirting his first year Bruss saw action in all 13 games with 6 starts - starting the final 3 games of the season at right tackle. The following year in 2019 he started all 13 games he played and gave up just a single sack and 16 total pressures on a total of 851 snaps.
In the COVID shortened season of 2020, Bruss started all 6 games at right guard - and on 425 snaps surrendered zero sacks and just 4 pressures on the year. He was awarded with an All-Big Ten third-team spot as a result.
As a senior in 2021, Bruss had his best season yet and while starting 9 games at right tackle and playing on 647 snaps he again didn't give up a sack and gave up just 9 total pressures. Bruss was awarded with a spot on the All-Big Ten 2nd-team at season's end.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Short area foot speed and quickness are very good combined with nice change of direction skills enable to effectively mirror rushers in pass protection
- Has displayed great versatility to play multiple positions at a high level throughout his college career
- Bruss has a wide frame with a strong lower body giving him the ability to anchor consistently
- Has a good understanding of the game - does not panic on blitzes and always maintains his gap
- Displays fluid movement skills ideally suited for a zone-blocking team
- Has consistently put up impressive numbers in pass protection - had two years without giving up a single sack
- Fast off the snap - shows good timing and effectively seals off wide angles while playing tackle
- Plays with decent leverage and wins against stronger players by getting low
- Is natural of knowing the QBs drop depth resulting in little wasted motion
- Has the feet to adjust when he anticipates what's coming. Effective trapping and bends at the knees with adequate core strength to absorb the bull rush. Can clear a path at the second level if he hits the target.
- Finishes and doesn't quit; competitor with a positive attitude and leadership traits that coaches admire
- Anchors against larger defenders in the middle; resets hands to maintain distance. Mirrors quick interior rushers. At guard, he looks to help the center when uncovered
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Isn't an elite quick-twitch blocker and his height causes him to be out-quicked. Leaks inside pressure when his technique gets sloppy.
- Has shorter than ideal arms leading him to overextend and being off balance
- His hand placement needs a lot of work. Is neither powerful of technically effecient
- Not physically imposing and has average overall upper body strength. Upper body gets over his feet too often and he easily loses his balance.
- Susceptible to speed rushers. Has only average quickness off the snap and doesn't possess the acceleration or arm length to corral defenders once they cross his face.
- Will punch at smaller defenders instead of latching on and is more of a mauler than mover in the running game. Can improve maintaining outside leverage when doubling the nose. Ducks his head and gets too upright, causing him to fall off second-level blocks.
- Attacks when necessary, though he won't consistently dominate and can lose balance overextending.
Scouting Report: Summary
Logan Bruss is a solid pro prospect who has decent athletic skills and technique and showcases an equal talent for both run and pass blocking. He will probably be looked at as an excellent swing tackle/guard prospect due to his impressive versatility to play all along the line. Bruss does most things well but doesn't have any outstanding qualities which will limit his draft appeal. We expect Bruss to be selected anywhere from the 4th to the 6th round in the 2022 NFL Draft and have a quality NFL career as a backup/part-time starter in a zone-blocking scheme.
