After high school, Mitchell joined Ohio State after being heavily recruited.In 2018 as a freshman Mitchell saw action in just 3 games and played a total of 4 snaps at linebacker for the Buckeyes. He recorded no tackles, no assists, while adding no stops.
As a sophomore for the Buckeyes in 2019 Mitchell played in 8 games and took part in 99 snaps for the Buckeyes. He recorded 10 tackles, 3 assists, while adding 6 stops. In coverage Mitchell made no pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 85.0.
In 2020 as a junior Mitchell played in 8 games and contributed on 95 snaps. He recorded only 7 tackles, one assist while making 4 stops.

Scouting Report: Strengths
- In coverage, Mitchell shows excellent awareness and anticipation when dropping back into zone, and he has the fluidity and speed to run with most tight ends over the middle.
- Reads the quarterback to anticipate and is a candidate to play outside.
- He’s effective in pursuit when chasing down backs as a run defender, and he has the athleticism to cover a lot of ground when dropping into coverage.
- He’s a sure and violent wrap-up tackler with sideline-to-sideline range. He’s an excellent tackler in space, showing loose hips and the ability to break down and contain runners.
- Has enough twitch and speed to make an impact coming off the edge as a third-down specialist.
- Ferocious against the run and very good in coverage, is extremely versatile. Despite his build, he holds up well in traffic and makes a lot of plays by engaging a block, shedding, and pursuing.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Locates the ball but takes circuitous routes to go get to it. Should use power and long arms to take on and disengage from blocks. Inefficient with his angles.
- Plays upright. Ducks his head and fails to wrap up at times. Inconsistent in giving full effort to be the second man in on the play. Must learn to use hands to beat blocks.
- Can be too hesitant when Mitchell doesn't find the ball immediately.
