Maema Njongmeta from Adlai Stevenson High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Njongmeta joined Wisconsin after being heavily recruited.In 2020 as a freshman Njongmeta saw action in just one game and played a total of 5 snaps at linebacker for the Badgers. He recorded no tackles, no assists, while adding no stops.
As a sophomore for the Badgers in 2021 Njongmeta played in 5 games and took part in 58 snaps for the Badgers. He recorded just 3 tackles, 2 assists, while adding one stop. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 3 total pressures, and 3 QB hurries, no QB hits, and no sacks during the year.
In 2022 as a junior Njongmeta played in 12 games and contributed on 545 snaps. He recorded solid 65 tackles, 20 assists while making 44 stops. - Reads the quarterback to anticipate and is a candidate to play outside.
- He’s a sure and violent wrap-up tackler with sideline-to-sideline range. He’s an excellent tackler in space, showing loose hips and the ability to break down and contain runners.
- Good quickness to attack ballcarriers when playing near the line. Breaks down and wraps legs to make the stop.
- Combines very good instincts with above-average reaction skills. Almost always finds the ball in traffic.
- Njongmeta combines the athleticism of a chase-and-tackle defender and the toughness and physicality of a classic 4-3 Mike.
- Shows toughness to get under the pads of tackles to bull them, club them upfield to get the inside lane, or fight through blocks for secondary rush when the passer steps up.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- As a pass rusher, Njongmeta lacks the ideal length to consistently win off the edge, even if he manages to improve his at-times sloppy hand usage.
- Obvious size limitations. Willing to take on blockers but is easily driven out of the play.
- Lacks functional strength in the pass rush, struggling to disengage and too easily pushed past the pocket.
