Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Cover skills, in both man and zone, as well as his speed, quickness, and agility, are very good. Fearless, relentless, and fast. Covers a lot of ground on the field.
  • Will stiff-arm linemen to stay free on some plays. Athletic enough to stay with running backs out of the backfield and knock receivers off crossing routes.
  • He’s an explosive mover who plays an aggressive, physical style. He’s extremely instinctive playing the run, and when Venables was at his best he showed sideline-to-sideline range.
  • Combines very good instincts with above-average reaction skills. Almost always finds the ball in traffic.
  • Along with great instincts, he’s an explosive mover. Venables can disrupt plays in the backfield due to his ability to read and react quickly.
  • Uses his low center of gravity to flash leverage and strong, violent hands to create space and shed to either side. Also spins off blocks to disengage.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Venables is on the small side, and his frame is pretty much maxed out. Despite his effort and intensity, he’ll simply get swallowed up at times.
  • Needs work on angles and· finding receivers in zone. Does not possess elite quickness. Fails to break down at times, grabbing shoulder pads and lunging to allow ballcarriers to elude him.
  • Possesses below-average instincts for the linebacker position. Leaves more plays on the field than Venables makes.
