Jahleel Billingsley from Phillips Academy High School was rated a 4 star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Billingsley opted to join Alabama.In 2019 as a freshman Billingsley saw action in 9 games for the Crimson Tide as he made 2 receptions for 16 yards for an average of 8.0 yards per reception, with no TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 60.4. As a blocker he allowed no pressures and no sacks.
As a sophomore in 2020 he played in 12 games and had 18 catches for 287 yards for an average of 15.9 yards per catch, with 3 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 158.3. In pass protection, he gave up one pressure and one sack. As a pass blocker he gave up no pressures and no sacks.
As a junior in 2021 he played in 15 games and hauled in 17 catches for 256 yards for an average of 15.1 yards per catch, with 3 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 73.7.
After the end of the season Billingsley transferred to Texas where as a senior in 2022 he played 4 games and had just 3 catches for 38 yards for an average of 12.7 yards per catch, no TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 70.1. In pass protection, he gave up no pressures and no sacks.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- A quality deep threat when used - has the speed to beat LBs with ease
- He can move the chains and has the skills to stand out in the red zone with sneaky foot speed and long stride to top producing tight end.
- Looks to get involved downfield and will block multiple defenders on a single play when he can. Understands his role as a blocker.
- Catches with his hands away from his frame. Strong hands to pull down the contested reception.
- Super athletic and rangy, but can excel as a receiver and elevate an offense to the next level.
- Capable of tracking passes from many angles. Good sideline awareness, taps quick feet to stay in-bounds.
- Has good hand-eye coordination and body control to turn and adjust to poorly thrown balls.
- Has quick feet and lateral agility to get open over the middle.
- Great vertical threat. Great at creating and finding an open window to be thrown the ball.
- Long arms with a large catch radius
- Difficult to bring down in the secondary - a matchup nightmare for corners (6'4" 230lbs)
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Incredibly small sample size made only 36 catches in three full seasons at Alabama
- Saban for whatever reason, threw him under the bus and didn't really give him a decent shot, then called him out for not producing
- Doesn't offer very much much as a blocker - more of a giant WR than a genuine tight end
- Will never be a dominant blocker because of his frame. Can easily be bull-rushed in protection
- Inconsistent with his release off the line of scrimmage.
- lean and underweight for the position would need to add at least another 20 lbs if he was to be able to become a good all-rounder
Scouting Report: Summary
Jahleel Billingsley's college career has been a massive disappointment. He was a player full of potential but was sidelined throughout his time at Alabama and never given a good opportunity to showcase his skill set. Whether this was due to him being surrounded by skill position stars limiting his opportunities, a problem with the coaching staff, or just that Billingsley wasn't pushing himself in practice - it's not easy to tell. What we do know is that his stock has taken a major tumble and he's no longer in first-round consideration.It will be interesting to see how he performs in the NFL because he has a ton of athletic talent and could potentially be a major asset in the passing game. We have a fourth-round grade on him and view him as a massive question mark, but expect a team may select him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft as a boom-bust pick.
